These days the term “Game-Changing" seems to be everywhere. Everything is a “game-changer.” Everyone seems to be selling a product that is game changing and everywhere I turn there is some new “game-changing" idea that is going to fix everything.
When I evolved past the Coaching and Leadership Journal that I wrote for over thirteen years, I wanted to continue to write and share my thoughts with anyone who cared to read them.
I found the Substack platform and decided to place my thoughts there. I thought about what I wanted to title my Substack and decided on Game Changing but not the reason so many others have chosen to call whatever it is they have that is game-changing.
When I “retired” from coaching after 38 years I tried to make it clear that I wasn’t retiring; instead, I, like life itself, was evolving.
I decided upon the name Game Changing because indeed my game had changed. I was no longer coaching or involved in athletics in any way. I had changed my game from coaching to writing.
Not only had I moved more toward writing but my thoughts were beginning to change as well. So many things that used to seem so important to me didn’t carry the same value.
I could feel myself evolving. I was questioning so many of my fundamental beliefs that made up my paradigm.
Some people close to me began to say I was having a mid-life crisis–a term I despise because it implies that others want you to stay within the confines of how they see you and if you evolve past that then it must be a crisis. I plan to write about that in an upcoming article.
My Game Changing Journal is a place to chronicle my evolution. I see so many people going through life joylessly while carrying the torch of being a martyr. I also see so many elderly people full of regret for an unlived life–things they wished they had done.
In every interview I gave after I retired from coaching, I made it clear that I was evolving to a new phase of life. In this game changing journal, I share my thoughts and opinions. I write about my evolution while also sharing some of my past writings about leadership and coaching.
These writings are what I believe, and I offer them without wanting to tell anyone what they should believe.
I am very aware that there are so many advice gurus out there. Just scroll through social media and you will be bombarded with influencer after influencer telling you what you should or shouldn’t do.
That is not the purpose of my Game Changing Substack. It is simply to show that life doesn't have to be a joyless ride. That it can be fun and that it is okay to change the way you look at things and to evolve from a life that no longer fits.
And I believe there are a lot of people out there who feel the same way but are afraid to go through the evolutionary process.
So, that’s a brief history of where the name for this Substack came from and the reason I continue to share my thoughts each week.
